The Intern tells the story of a 70-year old widower named Ben Whitaker (Robert De Niro) who finds himself bored of the monotony and inactivity of retirement, and thus, applies and gets accepted to a senior citizen internship program of a successful online fashion site. Possessing a positive attitude, experienced wisdom, and amiable personality, Ben wins over the admiration and fondness of his workmates, especially the company’s young CEO, Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway), who finds Ben’s friendship a welcome addition to her hectic life.
This movie has a likable cast, particularly De Niro and Hathaway – the two have wonderful screen chemistry. But I especially liked De Niro’s performance the most. His character, Ben, is the epitome of a nice guy. He’s the kind that would make you say, “Hey, I would like to be like him when I turn 70.” The movie’s most appealing aspect is definitely how Ben Whitaker brightens the lives of the people he encounters.
The Intern is a perfect example of a feel-good movie. It doesn’t really need to be too profound and substantial. It just needs to be charming, heartwarming, and funny enough to give its audience a good, cozy, and tranquil feeling. And The Intern succeeds with this objective perfectly.
