Allied is a romantic spy thriller set during World War II about a Royal
Canadian Air Force intelligence officer named Max Vatan (Brad Pitt) and a French
Resistance fighter named Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard) who fall in
love while on a deadly assignment in Casablanca, Morocco, posing as husband and
wife. After the mission, they get
married for real, settle in London, and have a baby girl. However, their marriage is threatened when
Max is informed by British intelligence that Marianne may be a German spy all
along.
Its premise has the makings of an
extremely interesting spy love story, it’s beautifully shot, and has great
production value. I mostly enjoyed it. But it tails off in its attempt to reach “epic”
territory; it’s neither terrific as a wartime thriller nor as a wartime
romance. And there’s something about
this movie that makes it seems it would have worked much better as a novel, and
if it had been so, I would have loved it.
According to gossips, the reason
Angelina Jolie broke up with Brad Pitt is because he was cheating with Marion
Cotillard during this movie’s production.
Of course, that may be probably pure hogwash. But if that’s indeed true, Brangelina’s
breakup is an excessive price to pay for Allied.
