Logan Lucky centers on a West Virginia blue-collar man named Jimmy
Logan (Channing Tatum) who, after getting laid off, assembles a crew – which
includes his one-armed Iraq War veteran brother Clyde (Adam Driver), sister
Mellie (Riley Keough), incarcerated explosion expert Joe Bang (Daniel Craig),
and Joe’s dim-witted brothers (Brian Gleeson, Jack Quaid) – to pull an
ambitious heist on the Charlotte Motor Speedway during the hectic Coca-Cola 600
race.
When I saw the trailer for this
movie, I never thought much of it.
However, it turned out being a thoroughly entertaining heist comedy film. It’s like Ocean’s Eleven, but the redneck version of it.
It closely follows the familiar plot
structure of a heist narrative, but it does so in a very entertaining and
subverting manner that you just don’t care that you actually have already seen
these story elements before in countless other movies. It’s funny, clever, and charming. It has thrills, surprises, and even feels.
From the main cast to the
supporting cast – which includes Katie Holmes, Seth MacFarlane, and Sebastian
Stan – the performances are great and endearing all around. But
among them, I enjoyed Craig the most.
Considering this is the suave James Bond we’re talking about, his amazing
redneck turn in this movie should be a testament to his range.
Logan Lucky is so much fun. For
what it’s going for, it’s probably as flawless as Daniel Craig’s Joe Bang. Just
like Ocean’s Eleven, there’s honestly no
part of Logan Lucky that I disliked.
