Top 10 Memorable Moments in 2019 Cinema and TV

There’s no longer enough time for me to make separate “most memorable moments” top tens for the movies, TV shows, and anime of 2019 like I did for 2018.  It’s in the middle of March already.  Still, I want to do at least one such list  So here are what I found to be the top ten most memorable moments from all the stuff I saw from both the big screen and small screen in 2019.

Honorable Mentions: Batman’s “Illuminati” is revealed to be pulling the strings from behind the scenes (Young Justice: Outsiders; Mandalorians rescue the Mandalorian (The Mandalorian); Tanjiro (with Nezuko) vs. Rui (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba); Ash finally wins his first ever Pokemon League championship (Pokemon: Sun and Moon)

10.) Kristoff’s “Lost in the Woods” Song Number (Frozen II)
One can argue that, by itself, “Lost in the Woods” is a beautiful song that wonderfully encapsulates the emotion and state of Kristoff’s arc at that point of the story.  Maybe.  That’s one way of looking at it.  But the lyrics and style of the song are really reminiscent of old-school, over-sentimental rock love songs like Peter Cetera’s “Glory of Love.”  The filmmakers might have realized this, and thus, proceeded to present the song number, tongue in cheek, as a cheesy, overdramatic 80’s-style music video.  Thus, it ended up being the most hilarious – and most memorable – scene in the movie.  What makes it funnier is that Kristoff’s voice actor, Jonathan Groff, took it seriously.  In one interview, he said, “We were completely genuine when we were making that song.  There was nothing funny about it at all and then the animators did such crazy things.” LOL!

Top 10 Moments of the 2019 NBA Postseason

Yeah, I know.  This is already very, very late.  But, hey, as the saying goes: better late than never…

10.) A Strong Kick-Off
The 2019 NBA playoffs opened with three of the four games resulting to upsets: the (E7) Orlando Magic, (E6) Brooklyn Nets, and (W7) San Antono Spurs respectively beat the (E2) Toronto Raptors, (E3) Philadelphia 76ers, and (W2) Denver Nuggers.  None of these teams went to the second round, and in the case of the Magic and the Nets, Game 1 was the only game they won in their respective series.  Nevertheless, the surprising victories of the lower seed teams started off the playoffs on an exciting note.

Top 20 Moments of the 2018-2019 NBA Regular Season

An NBA playoffs packed with notable happenings is brewing right now.  But before we can get to celebrating that, let’s first look back at some of the most spectacular, craziest, most meme-worthy – most memorable – moments of the regular season that preceded it.  I pick twenty.

20.) When Kuzma Scored 41 points in Just 3 Quarters in a Win Against the Pistons
Not exactly like Kobe’s 62 points in 3 quarters.  But there are few things to love from yet another abysmal Lakers season, and I’ll take what I can get.

Top 10 Memorable Movie Moments of 2018

From all of what I saw from 2018 cinema, here are the top ten moments that had been most memorable to me.

Honorable Mentions: the Brachiosaurus’ death scene (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Cash raps in his boss Steve’s party (Sorry to Bother You), Disney Princesses save Ralph (Ralph Breaks the Internet), Teen Titans time travel to prevent and then un-prevent the origins of superheroes (Teen Titans Go! To the Movies)

10.) Giant Oprah
Let’s start with an unforgettable moment for the wrong reasons.  A Wrinkle in Time was probably the worst movie I saw in 2018.  And there’s one thing from it that I will never forget (or two, if we count the most insufferable child actor/character in movie history): the hilariously terrifying image of gargantuan Oprah – a most unsettling titan this side of, well, Attack on Titan.

Top 10 Memorable TV Moments of 2018

Just like every year, 2018 had a lot of noteworthy moments on TV.  And once again, I’ll be enumerating in this list, not necessarily those that entertained me best, but those that retained in my memory the most.  Here are ten:

10.) The Winchester Brothers Meet the Scooby Gang
I don’t follow Supernatural, but I was compelled to watch the 16th episode of its 13th season, “Scoobynatural”, because it involved Sam and Dean getting sucked into the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episode “A Night of Fright Is Not Delight.”  It was such a bizarre, hilarious, delightful, smart crossover that I just have to put it in this list.

Top 10 Memorable Anime Moments of 2018

Since I separated anime from my TV shows list of 2018, I will also have this separate list for anime moments.  So here are the top ten moments that I think really stood out from anime 2018.

10.) Android 17 Wins Tournament of Power MVP
To be fair, the entire Tournament of Power arc – arguably the peak of Dragon Ball Super, and even the entire franchise – is probably what I have in my mind for this spot, and I’m just letting its final moment represent the whole.  Nevertheless, a second-tiered (maybe even third-tiered) character like Android 17 being the last man standing was still an unexpected turn, and a perfect way to cap an arc that was filled with exciting and surprising moments.

Top 10 Moments of the 2018 NBA Finals

Finals recap:
Other memorable moments of the 2017-2018 NBA Season:

This year’s Finals was pretty short due to a partly disappointing sweep.  Nevertheless, I thought it didn’t lack entertainment value, and there was a couple of memorable moments – amazing ones, fun ones, disappointing ones, weird ones.  Here are my ten-ish favorites (as well as thoughts on why LeBron isn’t the Greatest Of All Time yet):

10.) Love and LeBron’s Recurring Facial Expressions in this Series

It was like each time Durant or Curry put up a shot, Love was expecting a heart attack to happen.

Top 10 Moments of the 2018 NBA Playoffs

The Finals – Warriors vs. Cavaliers Part 4 – are upon us.  In the end, it will surely have tons of noteworthy moments.  But, first things first, let me enumerate what I think are the best moments of the rest of the 2018 NBA Playoffs (a.k.a. The LeBron James Show).

Top 10 Moments of the 2017-2018 NBA Regular Season

The NBA playoffs are upon us.  Everyone’s excited.  But before we enjoy that, let me list down what I think are the ten most memorable moments of the regular season.

10.) When the Memphis Grizzlies Lost by 61 Points
For the last spot, it came down to choosing between Andre Ingram and the Grizzlies’ 61-point loss.  I eventually went for the latter because ridiculing a humiliating trainwreck is more fun than celebrating a feel-good story.

Top 10 Memorable Comic Book Moments of 2017

Or rather…
Top 10 Memorable Batman Comic Book Moments of 2017

2017 was a Batman comic book year for me, and all of my most memorable comic book moments of the year involved Batman.

Honorable Mentions: Batman vs. Reverse-Flash (Batman #21); Kite Man’s origin story (Batman #27); Batman uses his rogue gallery to put Bane on a gauntlet, to wear him down before they go one-on-one (Batman #19); Batman recruits Lobo into the Justice League (Justice League vs. Suicide Squad #6); The Bat-family has a meeting in a Batman-themed burger joint, and Bruce Wayne eats his burger with a knife and fork (Batman #16)

10.) Zack explains why he attacked Batman (Justice League/Power Rangers #2).
Hilarious!

Top 20 Memorable TV Moments of 2017

Since the movies got twenty, TV will also get twenty.

20.)
In Kakegurui episode 11, in the gambling showdown between Jabami and the student council treasurer Manyuda, the latter refuses to acknowledge the authority of the dealer of the game, who is the masked student council vice-president, regarding the extraordinary stipulation of the final round.  Manyuda insists that only the president, who has gone away for a meeting, has the power to do that.  Then, the vice-president – who dons a mask all throughout the series – removes her mask, revealing her face for the first time.  To the shock of everyone present, it’s the president all along!  Apparently, the president and the vice-president are twins, and I presume that they are living their lives in the same manner as Christian Bale’s character(s) in The Prestige.

Top 20 Memorable Movie Moments of 2017

My favorite 2017 movies have already been listed.  Now it’s time to list the 2017 movie moments that have been most memorable to me – for being admirable, resonating, uplifting, heartbreaking, shocking, bizarre, insane, horrible, or in whatever way they have made a lasting, striking impression in my mind.

Last year, I only did a “top 10” list.  But this time around, there were so many to choose from that I just had to have twenty spots.

20.)
The Villainess’ POV opening scene.  It was unfortunately unmatched during the rest of the film.

Top 10 Moments in 'Orphan Black'

Orphan Black, a show that I really got to love, just ended after five seasons.  I already offered my final thoughts on it.  But, as a way of further paying tribute to such a great show, let me enumerate my most favorite moments.

10.) WHEN SARAH WITNESSED BETH’S SUICIDE
In Helena’s own words during the finale, “my sestra Sarah… stepped of a train one day and met herself.”

Top 10 Moments of the 2017 NBA Finals

My other favorite moments of the 2016-2017 NBA season:
My Finals recaps:

The 2017 NBA Finals certainly didn’t lack unforgettable moments.  But, just like before, I only have room for ten of them.

10.) The Dubs Winning the Championship
Let’s get the most obvious one out of the way: the moment the Warriors became champions again.

Top 10 Moments of the 2017 NBA Playoffs

As I mentioned in my list for notable regular season moments, I originally intended to make a list for playoffs moments once the playoffs ends – that means after the Finals.  But since a lot of fun stuff has been going on the Finals, I think its notable moments deserve a list of their own.  Hence, this “notable playoffs moments” list just covers the first three rounds of the 2017 NBA playoffs.

10.) When John Wall Hit a Gutsy Gamewinning 3-pointer, Forcing Game 7 in the East Semis
John Wall only shot 9-of-25 that game, but he was able to nail the shot that mattered most.  Down by two and facing elimination, Wall received the ball for the Wizards’ last possession.  With Avery Bradley – probably the Celtics’ best defender – on him, Wall hit a trey with 3.5 seconds remaining, which turned out being the gamewinner.

Top 10 Moments of the 2016-2017 NBA Regular Season

The 2016-2017 NBA regular season has been an exciting one – probably one of the best we’ve ever witnessed.  As usual, there were tons of spectacular moments.  But here are my ten most favorites.  (Note: I will also be doing a list for the playoffs when it’s done.)

10.) When Devin Booker Scored 70
When I read the news that Devin Booker scored 70 points against Celtics, I was stunned.  If anybody from today’s generation of players can ever come close to Kobe’s 81-point game, I expected it to be someone like Stephen Curry or Russell Westbrook.  But Devin Booker?  Sure, he’s shown promise, but never did I expect that he has this in him.

Top 10 Moments in 'Planet Earth II'

Planet Earth II is a nature documentary mini-series from BBC, and serves as sequel to 2006’s Planet Earth.  It was originally released in the UK in 2016, but was widely released to international audiences this year.  And I recently had the pleasure of watching it.  As a kid, I had watched and enjoyed tons of this stuff, particularly in Discovery Channel.  Hence, I’ve always loved nature documentaries (I’m currently looking forward to Disneynature’s latest film, Born in China).  So I had a blast with Planet Earth II.

Top 10 Memorable Comic Book Moments of 2016

Did one for movies.  Did one for TV shows.  Now, I will be listing my picks for “memorable moments” in 2016 comics.

Honorable mentions: New 52 Superman dies, pre-New 52 Superman replaces him; the Marvel Universe is rebuilt after Secret Wars, and Reed Richards and First Family begin rebuilding the multiverse; Batman teams up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to fight Shredder and the Foot Clan and Ra’s al Ghul and the League of Assassins; New 52 Lois Lane dies, after being hyped as the new Superwoman, which actually ended up being Lana Lang; how (adult) Cyclops died is finally revealed

10.) Ben Reilly returns, and is the new Jackal. (Clone Conspiracy #3)

Top 10 Memorable TV Moments of 2016

After doing a list for big screen moments of 2016, it’s now the small screen’s turn.  As it was with my list for memorable movie moments, a featured moment in this list could be either positive or negative, joyful or heartbreaking, gratifying or infuriating, as long as it left a striking, “easy-to-recall” impression on me.

Honorable mentions: Battle of the Bastards (Game of Thrones); Karasuno beat Shiratorizawa for the Miyagi Prefecture Championship (Haikyuu!!); Leonad Snart a.k.a. Captain Cold’s ultimate sacrifice (Legends of Tomorrow); Dr. Stein sings “Edelweiss” (Legends of Tomorrow); Saw reference in Venture Bros.; Ash lost in the Pokemon League… AGAIN! (Pokemon)

10.)
Here’s the thing.  I didn’t enjoy the second season of Mr. Robot as much as I did its first (that’s why it didn’t make my top 20 list for 2016 TV shows, when it was the ninth placer of my 2015 list).  Season two started to feel a tad pretentious, and seemed to be delivering plot twists just for the sake of having them.  But I really liked how the episode “Man in the Trunk” started off as if it was an 80’s sitcom centered on Elliot and his family (Alf even had a cameo).  Later, it was revealed that this was simply another defense mechanism brought by Elliot’s psychosis, to detach himself from the pain of getting beaten up. Definitely more clever than “Elliot is in prison all along” twist.

Top 10 Memorable Movie Moments of 2016

These are ten moments that I will remember the most from 2016 movies.   This doesn’t mean that this list is made up entirely of good moments or just my favorite moments.  Bad or hilariously ridiculous moments can be as much effectively memorable as the positive ones (though the word “memorable” often refers to something positive).

Honorable mentions: Deadpool’s opening sequence; “I Am Moana” scene in Moana; Batman and Batgirl’s shocking sex scene in The Killing Joke; “Dormammu, I’ve come to bargain” scene in Doctor Strange; Jackie Chan sings “Rolling in the Deep” in Skiptrace; The Bronze’s absurd, acrobatic sex scene; the raunchy culmination of Sausage Party

10.)
Now You See Me 2’s intricate chip heist scene. Where the Four Horsemen steals a data-mining chip, doing so in full light of security guards, by hiding it in a playing card and passing it among themselves.
